Types of Traumatic Brain Injury

Image
Injuries occur to the brain, skull, and scalp are refered as brain injury . Complications and required treatments will greatly depend on the location of the injury, how the injury is acquired, and the severity of the brain damage. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is an injury to the brain caused by a trauma to the head. There are many possible causes, including road traffic accidents, falls, assaults and accidents at home or at work. Types of Traumatic Brain Injury There are four main types of TBIs. They are concussion, contusion, penetrating injury, and anoxic brain injury. Concussions A concussion is a minor brain injury that is caused by shaking, a sudden change in movement, like whiplash or   an impact to the head. It can cause headaches, memory loss, problems with concentration and disorientation. They should considered as serious and should be treated as soon as possible. Contusion Just like have a bruise on the skin, a brain contusion is a bruise

WHAT IS NEUROPSYCHOLOGY?

Image
The brain is complex. Disorders within the brain and nervous system can change behavior and cognitive function. Neuropsychology is the study of relationships of brain–behavior. On theoretical basis it aims at understanding the relationships between the brain, on the one side and the mind and behavioral control, on the other. It is a complex field of study, relating various fields like neurology, psychology, psychiatry, clinical neurosciences, physiology and statistics.  In the majority of psychiatric disorders focal brain lesions are rare. The real challenge of neuropsychology in relation to psychiatry is to understand abnormal behavior in terms of dysfunctional processing of information. This is related to abnormally functioning brain systems than to localized brain damage.   Neuropsychology has led to the advanced study of psychiatric disorder over past decades. It is now seen as an essential discipline for the study of psychiatric disorder. This improvement has b

Spinal Cord Injury

Image
Spinal cord is a long, tubelike structure that starts from the end of the brain stem and continues to the bottom of the spine. It is most important structure between the body and the brain. It consists of nerves that carry incoming and outgoing messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Any damage to the spinal cord either from trauma , loss of its normal blood supply, or compression from tumor or infection, that causes changes its function, either temporary or permanent is called spinal cord injury (SCI) .These changes translate into loss of muscle function, sensation, or autonomic function in parts of the body served by the spinal cord below the level of the lesion. Spinal cord is very sensitive to injury. If it is damaged the spinal cord does not have the ability to repair itself unlike other body parts. Types of Spinal Cord Injuries Spinal cord injuries are divided into two: Incomplete and Complete. Incomplete spinal cordinjuries: In an incomplete

Stroke - Types, Symptoms and Treatment

Image
What is a stroke? The brain is one of the most important organs in the human body. It serves as a control center for almost all of the systems in the body. In order for it to receive the nutrients and oxygen it needs to function, the cardiovascular system delivers blood to areas around the brain. A stroke occurs when the supply of blood to the brain is either interrupted or reduced. When this happens, the brain does not get enough oxygen or nutrients, and brain cells start to die. What Are the Symptoms of Stroke? Most common symptoms of a stroke are: Weakness or numbness of the face, leg, or arm on one side of the body. Sudden, severe headache with unknown cause. Loss of balance cause difficulty in walking. Loss of vision. Loss of speech, feels difficult to talk or difficult to understand what others saying. Types There are three main types of stroke: Ischemic stroke: Ischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot forms in the brain so tha

Gait and Balance Disorders

One of the most common causes of falls particularly amongst the elderly are Gait and balance disorders. It lead to injury, loss of independence ,disability and limited quality of life. They are associated with increased mortality and morbidity, as well as reduced level of function. It has proved Neurological gait and balance impairment is difficult to treat. Early identification of gait and balance disorders and appropriate intervention may prevent loss of independence and dysfunction. Symptoms The most common symptoms of gait and balance problems include: Difficult to walk Light-headedness Unsteadiness Vertigo Motion sickness Double vision Trouble with balance Also people   feel Dizziness Other symptoms depends on cause or condition. Causes Causes of temporary gait or balance complications include: Injury Trauma Inflammation Pain Longer-term difficulties often result from muscular neurological issue.
