Stroke Treatment

Image
Stroke treatment may vary depending on whether the stroke is caused by a blood clot (ischemic stroke) or a brain bleed (hemorrhagic stroke). It involves drugs, surgery, or other therapies. Treatments for stroke will give to the patient as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of permanent brain damage . Treatment for Ischemic Stroke Ischemic strokes happen when a blood clot in an artery blocks the flow of blood and oxygen to a portion of the brain. With this type of stroke, the goal is to restore blood flow to the brain as quickly as possible. A number of medications may be given at the hospital to help break up the clot and prevent the formation of new clots. These medications may include: Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA, alteplase): Alteplase or tPA is a thrombolytic medication, often referred to as a clot buster. These drugs must be started within a few hours after stroke symptoms first appear. They will quickly break up or dissolve blood clots that a...

Spinal Cord Injury:Types and Treatment

Image
Spinal Cord The spinal cord is a collection of nerves that go from the bottom of the brain down to back. There are 31 pairs of nerves that leave the spinal cord and go to arms, legs, chest, and abdomen. These nerves allow the brain to give commands to muscles and cause movements of arms and legs. The nerves that control arms exit from the upper portion of the spinal cord, while the nerves to legs exit from the lower portion of the spinal cord. The nerves also control the function of organs including the heart , lungs, bowels, and bladder. The spinal cord runs through the spinal canal. This canal is surrounded by the bones in neck and back called vertebrae which make up the backbone of the human. The vertebrae are divided into 7 necks (cervical) vertebrae, 12 chests (thoracic) vertebrae and 5 lower back (lumbar) vertebrae. The vertebrae help protect the spinal cord from injury. Spinal Cord Injury The spinal cord is very sensitive to injury. If it is damaged unlike o...

Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord is a long, tubelike structure that starts from the end of the brain stem and continues to the bottom of the spine. It is most important structure between the body and the brain. It consists of nerves that carry incoming and outgoing messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Any damage to the spinal cord either from trauma , loss of its normal blood supply, or compression from tumor or infection, that causes changes its function, either temporary or permanent is called spinal cord injury (SCI) .These changes translate into loss of muscle function, sensation, or autonomic function in parts of the body served by the spinal cord below the level of the lesion. Spinal cord is very sensitive to injury. If it is damaged the spinal cord does not have the ability to repair itself unlike other body parts. Types of Spinal Cord Injuries Spinal cord injuries are divided into two: Incomplete and Complete. Incomplete spinal cordinjuries: In an incomplete ...

Types Of Spinal Cord Injury Incomplete spinal cord injury: The spinal cord will get some messages to and from the brain in an incomplete spinal cord injury . There is some movement or feeling below the level of injury. This includes feeling and muscle activity in the rectum. Complete spinal cord in...
