Traumatic brain injury Management

Image
Traumatic brain injury is common and a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Management is based on avoidance of secondary injury, maintenance of cerebral perfusion pressure, and optimization of cerebral oxygenation. Multimodality monitoring of the injured brain enables individualized therapeutic targets to be set to optimize patient management. Patients with moderate or severe brain injury should be managed in a specialist neurosurgical center. Traumatic brain injury (TBI)                     Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death and disability in young adults in the developed world. It can be divided into primary and secondary brain injury. The primary injury occurs as a consequence of the initial physical insult. The pattern and extent of damage will depend on the nature, intensity, and duration of the impact. Compression and shearing forces may...

Principles of neurological rehabilitation

Image
Neurology has an undeserved reputation for being a specialty where diagnosis requires great intellectual effort, although from which little therapeutic intervention flows. Rehabilitation is mainly the science which restores something that is damaged from its former condition. It is of different types, such as Occupational rehabilitation , Drug Rehabilitation , Physical Therapy , Physical medicine and Rehabilitation , Psychiatric rehabilitation, neuropsychology and many more. Rehabilitation is mostly done for the people suffered with different neural disorders, which help them to move on with their life normally. Neurological rehabilitation can offer all patients great help. It can be defined as a process that aims to optimize a person’s participation in society and sense of well-being. This definition highlights several important features: rehabilitation is not a particular type of intervention; the focus is on the patient as a person; the goals relate to social functioning, ...

Paralysis: Causes and Treatment

Image
About Paralysis Paralysis means the loss of muscle function and is usually accompanied by a sensory loss in the affected area. It’s usually caused by damage to the central nervous system especially the spinal cord. Causes include stroke, trauma, nerve damage, polio, multiple sclerosis, etc. Paralysis can occur either partially or fully. Paralysis of both arms and legs is called quadriplegia and lower half paralysis is called paraplegia. It happens because the brain can’t send messages to the different parts of the body for various reasons. If the nerve fibers are damaged the paralysis is usually irreversible. Causes of Paralysis Paralysis can happen for a number of reasons, but the most common causes are as follows: Stroke: Almost 30 percent of all paralyses are caused by stroke . It may due to the blood that flows to the brain get blocked, or a blood vessel inside the brain bursts.  Spinal cord injury: It is the second largest cause of paralysis after ...

What kinds of problems and treatment can people have after a stroke?

Image
The problems after a stroke depend on which part of the brain was affected and how much damage the stroke caused. People who had a stroke often have: Problems with movement and sensation: They may have pain, numbness, or tingling in arms and legs; muscle stiffness or spasms; weakness; and trouble with walking and moving. They may have problems with sense of touch or how well they feel hot and cold, troubles in  swallowing and eating, and urinary or bowel problems. Problems with vision: They may have problems seeing in some or all of the normal areas of vision. Problems with not being aware of one side of their body. If they don't look to that side, they may forget or ignore that side of body. Spinal Cord Injury Facts

Image
The spinal cord is a collection of nerves that travels from the bottom of the brain down your back. There are 31 pairs of nerves that leave the spinal cord and go to your arms, legs, chest and abdomen. These nerves allow your brain to give commands to your muscles and cause movements of your arms and legs. The spinal cord runs through the spinal canal. This canal is surrounded by the bones in your neck and back called vertebrae which make up your back bone. The vertebrae are divided into 7 neck (cervical) vertebrae, 12 chest (thoracic) vertebrae and 5 lower back (lumbar) vertebrae. The vertebrae help protect the spinal cord from injury.  The spinal cord is very sensitive to injury. Unlike other parts of your body, the spinal cord does not have the ability to repair itself if it is damaged. A spinal cord injury occurs when there is damage to the spinal cord either from trauma, loss of its normal blood supply, or compression from tumor or infection. Spinal cord injury can b...
