WHY JOINING A SUPPORT GROUP AFTER A BRAIN INJURY IS HELPFUL

Image
Traumaticbrain injury can happen when a sudden, violent blow or jolt to the head results in damage to the brain. The long-term effects of a TBI , and the effects it can have on your work, your family and friends, are some of which can be life-changing. The purpose of a support group is to provide an environment in which members can share emotions and experiences and support one another for the mutual benefit of the total group.  Here’s how joining a group can be an important component of the rehabilitation process for both patients and their caregivers: Support Groups Help People Feel Less Isolated As family and friends move on with their lives, survivors can easily be marginalized and isolated, furthering a sense of being alone. Support groups allow people with brain injuries to see that there is a large community of brain injury organizations and people with TBI s who've had similar experiences. Sharing experiences creates opportunities for members to reali...

WHAT IS NEUROPSYCHOLOGY?

Image
The brain is complex. Disorders within the brain and nervous system can change behavior and cognitive function. Neuropsychology is the study of relationships of brain–behavior. On theoretical basis it aims at understanding the relationships between the brain, on the one side and the mind and behavioral control, on the other. It is a complex field of study, relating various fields like neurology, psychology, psychiatry, clinical neurosciences, physiology and statistics.  In the majority of psychiatric disorders focal brain lesions are rare. The real challenge of neuropsychology in relation to psychiatry is to understand abnormal behavior in terms of dysfunctional processing of information. This is related to abnormally functioning brain systems than to localized brain damage.   Neuropsychology has led to the advanced study of psychiatric disorder over past decades. It is now seen as an essential discipline for the study of psychiatric disorder. This improvem...

Principles of neurological rehabilitation

Image
Neurology has an undeserved reputation for being a specialty where diagnosis requires great intellectual effort, although from which little therapeutic intervention flows. Rehabilitation is mainly the science which restores something that is damaged from its former condition. It is of different types, such as Occupational rehabilitation , Drug Rehabilitation , Physical Therapy , Physical medicine and Rehabilitation , Psychiatric rehabilitation, neuropsychology and many more. Rehabilitation is mostly done for the people suffered with different neural disorders, which help them to move on with their life normally. Neurological rehabilitation can offer all patients great help. It can be defined as a process that aims to optimize a person’s participation in society and sense of well-being. This definition highlights several important features: rehabilitation is not a particular type of intervention; the focus is on the patient as a person; the goals relate to social functioning, ...

Spinal Cord Injury Facts

Image
The spinal cord is a collection of nerves that travels from the bottom of the brain down your back. There are 31 pairs of nerves that leave the spinal cord and go to your arms, legs, chest and abdomen. These nerves allow your brain to give commands to your muscles and cause movements of your arms and legs. The spinal cord runs through the spinal canal. This canal is surrounded by the bones in your neck and back called vertebrae which make up your back bone. The vertebrae are divided into 7 neck (cervical) vertebrae, 12 chest (thoracic) vertebrae and 5 lower back (lumbar) vertebrae. The vertebrae help protect the spinal cord from injury.  The spinal cord is very sensitive to injury. Unlike other parts of your body, the spinal cord does not have the ability to repair itself if it is damaged. A spinal cord injury occurs when there is damage to the spinal cord either from trauma, loss of its normal blood supply, or compression from tumor or infection. Spinal cord injury can b...
