PHYSIOTHERAPY AFTER SPINAL CORD INJURY

Image
The Spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that runs from the base of the brain down the back. Spinal Cord Injury occurs when there is damage to the spinal cord from an injury or a disease process. It's an extremely serious type of physical trauma that's likely to have a lasting and significant impact on most aspects of daily life. SCI often causes permanent changes in strength, sensation and other body functions below the site of the injury. There are two kinds of spinal cord injury - complete and incomplete. In a complete injury, a person loses all ability to feel and voluntarily move below the level of the injury. In an incomplete injury, there is some functioning below the level of the injury. Causes There are two common causes of Spinal Cord Injury . The first is identified as a traumatic SCI. This means the injury has occurred because of an external impact or injury damaging the spinal cord. The most common causes of traumatic SCI are motor ...

HEMORRHAGIC STROKE: SYMPTOMS & TREATMENT

Image
There are 2 types of stroke - Hemorrhagic and Ischaemic . Hemorrhagic stroke, as the name implies is due to bleeding into the brain. It is less common (almost 15%) than Ischaemic stroke but accounts for almost 40% of stroke related death.  Cause: Hypertension is the commonest cause of hemorrhagic stroke. Other causes are bleeding into the brain from a weak blood vessel such as an aneurysm, arterio-venous malformation etc.   Investigation: A CT scan can help diagnose hemorrhagic stroke. In some cases, the neuro-surgeon need additional investigations including MRI, MRA and CT Angiography, to look for other causes of bleeding as above.  Treatment : Immediate treatment: Admission to a hospital with ICU facilities is needed. Hypertension should be controlled immediately. In cases of major bleeding, where intra-cerebral pressure is elevated, a potentially life threatening condition, patient has to be managed in neuro-surgical ICU. Neuro surgica...

LIFE AFTER STROKE

Image
A stroke is a serious medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to any part of the brain is interrupted partly. When this happens, brain cells become deprived of oxygen and will begin to die soon. As a result, abilities controlled by that area of the brain are also lost. How a person is affected by a stroke and its recovery totally depends on where the stroke occurs in the brain and how much the brain is damaged. A Stroke can affect a person's ability to do things they were able to do before the stroke. Some of the most common effects of a stroke are described below. Weakness Weakness or paralysis is very common after stroke, depending on which side of the brain the stroke occurred. Hemiplegia and Hemiparesis are the two most common kinds paralysis, that can happen after a stroke. Hemiplegia is caused by an injury to the parts of the brain that control movement and is often accompanied by the side effects such as: Muscle spasticit...

What is neurological rehabilitation?

Image
The goal of rehabilitation in case of nervous system diseases is likewise to restore the function of the nervous system as much as possible, to optimize everyday activities, and to achieve social participation to the highest degree possible. How does rehabilitation work? Rehabilitation aims to restore health in the best possible manner after the onset of neurological disorders (such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease) or after a stroke. The goal is to restore the patient’s independence as much as possible. A rehabilitation team creates an individual treatment plan for each patient. After an initial examination, personal goals are defined. A rehabilitation stay usually lasts four weeks. During this time, the patient will receive at least two to three hours of therapy per day. Different phases of neurological rehabilitation Neurological rehabilitation consists of 7 phases: They are based on the severity of the neurological injuries and their symptoms. The...

Stroke Treatment

Image
Stroke treatment may vary depending on whether the stroke is caused by a blood clot (ischemic stroke) or a brain bleed (hemorrhagic stroke). It involves drugs, surgery, or other therapies. Treatments for stroke will give to the patient as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of permanent brain damage . Treatment for Ischemic Stroke Ischemic strokes happen when a blood clot in an artery blocks the flow of blood and oxygen to a portion of the brain. With this type of stroke, the goal is to restore blood flow to the brain as quickly as possible. A number of medications may be given at the hospital to help break up the clot and prevent the formation of new clots. These medications may include: Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA, alteplase): Alteplase or tPA is a thrombolytic medication, often referred to as a clot buster. These drugs must be started within a few hours after stroke symptoms first appear. They will quickly break up or dissolve blood clots that a...

Stroke Awareness and Treatment

Image
Sudden death of the brain cells due to the lack of blood supply to brain may cause stroke. Brain cells quickly die due to lack of blood as blood supply oxygen and nutrients and remove waste products. Based on the parts of the brain affected a stroke may cause paralysis , loss of memory and reasoning ability, impairment, speech coma, or death. A stroke also is sometimes called a brain attack or a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Paralysis Paralysis occur as a result of stroke. One side of the body is affected which is opposite to the damaged part of the brain by stroke. If right side of the brain is damaged, paralysis occur on the left side of the body. This one-sided paralysis is called hemiplegia. Stroke patients with hemiparesis or hemiplegia may have difficulties in walking or grasping objects. Some stroke patients have problems with swallowing, called dysphagia, due to damage to the part of the brain that controls the muscles for swallowing. Damage to the lower part...

Stroke can happen at any age

Image
Stroke can happen to anyone at any age. In fact, research shows among younger people stroke are on the rise. So, it's important to know about the risk factors that affect stroke and work to prevent those that can be managed, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Stroke risk increases with age, but stroke in young people, including infants, children, adolescents, and young adults, does happen. Even though the overall rate of stroke is decreasing, it is increasing for young and middle-aged people. There are several types of stroke, but all of them are caused by decreased blood supply to the brain. The most common type is an ischemic stroke , and they're either caused by a blood clot in the brain's blood vessels, or a blood clot that develops outside the brain and travels to those vessels. In young adults Cardiogenic causes which may include rheumatic heart disease, heart valve abnormalities, and being born with a hole between the right and left side ...

Types of Stroke and Stroke Rehabilitation

Image
Stroke  mainly happen by two ways. Either there is a blood clot or plaque that blocks an artery in the brain, or a blood vessel in the brain breaks, causing a bleed in the brain. This stops blood from getting through, stopping the delivery of oxygen and nutrients. Blocked artery A stroke caused by a blood clot is called an ischemic stroke . There are two types of ischemic stroke: Embolic stroke If a blood clots forms somewhere in the body, it can travel through the bloodstream to the brain. Once in the brain, the clot travels to a blood vessel that’s too small for it to pass through. It gets stuck there and stops blood from getting through. Thrombotic stroke As the blood flows through the arteries, it may leave behind cholesterol-laden plaques that stick to the inner wall of the artery. Over time, these plaques can increase in size and narrow or block the artery and stop blood getting through. A transient ischemic  attack (TIA) is sometimes k...
