PHYSIOTHERAPY AFTER SPINAL CORD INJURY

Image
The Spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that runs from the base of the brain down the back. Spinal Cord Injury occurs when there is damage to the spinal cord from an injury or a disease process. It's an extremely serious type of physical trauma that's likely to have a lasting and significant impact on most aspects of daily life. SCI often causes permanent changes in strength, sensation and other body functions below the site of the injury. There are two kinds of spinal cord injury - complete and incomplete. In a complete injury, a person loses all ability to feel and voluntarily move below the level of the injury. In an incomplete injury, there is some functioning below the level of the injury. Causes There are two common causes of Spinal Cord Injury . The first is identified as a traumatic SCI. This means the injury has occurred because of an external impact or injury damaging the spinal cord. The most common causes of traumatic SCI are motor ...

LIFE AFTER STROKE

Image
A stroke is a serious medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to any part of the brain is interrupted partly. When this happens, brain cells become deprived of oxygen and will begin to die soon. As a result, abilities controlled by that area of the brain are also lost. How a person is affected by a stroke and its recovery totally depends on where the stroke occurs in the brain and how much the brain is damaged. A Stroke can affect a person's ability to do things they were able to do before the stroke. Some of the most common effects of a stroke are described below. Weakness Weakness or paralysis is very common after stroke, depending on which side of the brain the stroke occurred. Hemiplegia and Hemiparesis are the two most common kinds paralysis, that can happen after a stroke. Hemiplegia is caused by an injury to the parts of the brain that control movement and is often accompanied by the side effects such as: Muscle spasticit...

What is Nontraumatic Spinal Cord Injury?

Image
Any damage to the spinal cord that has not been caused by a major trauma may led to Nontraumatic Spinal Cord Injury . It occurs when spinal cord has been damaged in other ways such as infection, loss of blood supply, compression by a cancer or through slow degeneration of the spinal bones (vertebrae) such as in osteoarthritis. The spinal cord acts as a connector between the brain and the body; the brain sends signals out through nerves that run down the spinal cord, and from there other nerves go out into the body. These control things like movement of muscles, but also other functions such as sweating, urination and defecation. The body also sends signals up through the spinal cord to the brain via other nerves giving information about touch, temperature, position and pain. The brain can no longer send or receive information to or from the parts of the body if spinal cord gets injured. In a nontraumatic spinal injury, something has happened that has stopped the connection b...

Role of a Physical Therapist

They take care of patients in all phases of healing, from initial diagnosis through the restorative and preventive stages of recovery. They can treat a wide variety of medical conditions, depending on their specialty. Some conditions that can benefit from physical therapy treatment are: Cardiopulmonary conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis (CF) and post-myocardial infarction (MI). Hand therapy for conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger. Musculoskeletal dysfunction such as back pain, rotator cuff tears, and temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ). Stroke Awareness and Treatment

Image
Sudden death of the brain cells due to the lack of blood supply to brain may cause stroke. Brain cells quickly die due to lack of blood as blood supply oxygen and nutrients and remove waste products. Based on the parts of the brain affected a stroke may cause paralysis , loss of memory and reasoning ability, impairment, speech coma, or death. A stroke also is sometimes called a brain attack or a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Paralysis Paralysis occur as a result of stroke. One side of the body is affected which is opposite to the damaged part of the brain by stroke. If right side of the brain is damaged, paralysis occur on the left side of the body. This one-sided paralysis is called hemiplegia. Stroke patients with hemiparesis or hemiplegia may have difficulties in walking or grasping objects. Some stroke patients have problems with swallowing, called dysphagia, due to damage to the part of the brain that controls the muscles for swallowing. Damage to the lower part...

Benefits of Occupational Therapy for Stroke Patients

A stroke is a brain attack that can happen to anyone at any time. Strokes often cause temporary or permanent paralysis. Balance, memory, speech, cognition, and vision may also be affected by stroke. In addition, muscle spasms and pain are common complications of a stroke. Communication and swallowing problems are common problems after a stroke. Stroke survivors may have difficulty in managing basic tasks such as bathing and dressing due to these problems. Accordingly, it may be challenging for them to continue to manage their roles as spouses, parents, or employees.
