PHYSIOTHERAPY AFTER SPINAL CORD INJURY

The Spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that runs from the base of the brain down the back. Spinal Cord Injury occurs when there is damage to the spinal cord from an injury or a disease process.

It's an extremely serious type of physical trauma that's likely to have a lasting and significant impact on most aspects of daily life.

SCI often causes permanent changes in strength, sensation and other body functions below the site of the injury.

There are two kinds of spinal cord injury - complete and incomplete. In a complete injury, a person loses all ability to feel and voluntarily move below the level of the injury. In an incomplete injury, there is some functioning below the level of the injury.

Causes

There are two common causes of Spinal Cord Injury. The first is identified as a traumatic SCI. This means the injury has occurred because of an external impact or injury damaging the spinal cord.

The most common causes of traumatic SCI are motor vehicle accidents, falls, accidents from sport or recreational activities such as diving into shallow water, or from a violent attack
The second cause of Spinal Cord Injury is non-traumatic SCI and occurs when a disease process, infection or tumor damages or presses on the spinal cord causing the loss of function.

How Physiotherapy Works?

This type of traditional therapy involves a lot of hands-on therapy, exercises, and stretching maneuvers to facilitate movement. The goal is to help a patient manage pain, improve circulation, prevent or reduce muscle atrophy, contractures, and weakness, and improve their overall health and wellness. This is done by helping to retrain your brain and body in an attempt to regain some or all lost mobility.

A physiotherapist can help at every stage from immediately after the injury or the onset of symptoms; through rehabilitation and managing long-term concerns related to living with an SCI. A physiotherapist will provide education, exercises, equipment, and strategies to manage functional activities.

Thus rehab process may help you regain some functions that the injury took away.
