Stroke Recovery: Tips for the Caregiver

Image
We should be aware of the medications that have been prescribed to our loved one and their side effects. Ask whether our home should be modified to meet the specific needs of the stroke survivor. Ask a doctor, nurse or therapist to provide written information that explains what occurs after the stroke and during recovery or rehabilitation. If the treatment recommendations are not followed, the survivors who have had one stroke are at high risk of having another one. Be sure that they eat a healthy diet, takes medications as prescribed, exercises, and has regular visits with their physician to help prevent a second stroke. Recovery depends on many different factors: where in the brain the stroke occurred, how much of the brain was affected, caregiver support, the quantity and quality of rehabilitation, the patient’s motivation, and how healthy the survivor was before the stroke.  Avoid comparisons, because every stroke and stroke survivor is unique. During the firs...

Stroke Awareness and Treatment

Sudden death of the brain cells due to the lack of blood supply to brain may cause stroke. Brain cells quickly die due to lack of blood as blood supply oxygen and nutrients and remove waste products. Based on the parts of the brain affected a stroke may cause paralysis , loss of memory and reasoning ability, impairment, speech coma, or death. A stroke also is sometimes called a brain attack or a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Paralysis Paralysis occur as a result of stroke. One side of the body is affected which is opposite to the damaged part of the brain by stroke. If right side of the brain is damaged, paralysis occur on the left side of the body. This one-sided paralysis is called hemiplegia. Stroke patients with hemiparesis or hemiplegia may have difficulties in walking or grasping objects. Some stroke patients have problems with swallowing, called dysphagia, due to damage to the part of the brain that controls the muscles for swallowing. Damage to the lower part...

Spasticity Management

Image
A condition in which certain muscles are continuously contracted is Spasticity . This contraction causes tightness or stiffness of the muscles and can interfere with speech, normal movement, and gait. Damage to the portion of the spinal cord or brain that controls voluntary movement may cause  Spasticity .   For the management of spasticity, a variety of strategies are available. It includes improving hygiene, pain, gait, activities of daily living (ADLs), and ease of care; decreasing the frequency of spasm and related discomfort; and eliminating noxious stimuli.   While treating a spastic muscle, it is necessary to assess the impact of its antagonistic muscle groups. While often weak, these muscle groups themselves may be spastic. Without treatment of the antagonist muscle treatment of the agonist muscle may create an additional problem instead of a solution.   Types of therapy   A vari...

Things to know about Stroke Rehabilitation

What Is Stroke? A stroke occurs when brain loses supply of blood by either a block or burst artery.Since brain cells cannot survive without oxygen, the lack of oxygen-rich blood causes brain damage which results in stroke side effects. There are many side effects after stroke. Some of the most common ones are: Impaired movement or paralysis on one side of the body Spasticity (stiff, tight muscles) Aphasia (difficulty speaking) Foot drop (difficulty lifting the foot) What is stroke rehabilitation? After treatment for stroke in hospital, many patients still have problems with mental, speech and physical functions. Rehabilitation helps the patient to overcome these problems. Rehabilitation programs helps patients to regain lost skills, relearn tasks and work to be independent again. It helps the brain to recover. Sometimes major neurological deficits do not improve, the patients functioning can improve as they learn ways to compensate for their problems. Factor...
