LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

Traumatic brain injury often referred to as TBI, is an injury to the brain caused by a blow to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain.

There are many possible causes, including car or motorcycle crashes, falls, sports injuries, and assaults with or without a weapon.

The severity of symptoms will depend on which part of the brain is affected, whether it is in a specific location or over a widespread area, and the extent of the damage.

Immediately after the accident the person may be confused, not remember what happened, have blurry vision and dizziness, or lose consciousness.

Traumatic brain injury can have wide-ranging physical and psychological effects. Some signs or symptoms may appear immediately after the traumatic event, while others may appear days or weeks later.

The specific effects may vary from case to case, but some traumatic head injury long-term effects include:

  •          Memory loss
  •          Mood swings
  •          Impaired language skills
  •          Coma/loss of consciousness
