STROKE PREVENTION THROUGH HEALTHY LIFESTYLE - AVA REHAB

A stroke, or "brain attack," occurs when blood circulation to the brain fails. Brain cells can die from decreased blood flow and the resulting lack of oxygen.

The best way to prevent a stroke is to eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly and avoid smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol.

Healthy Diet

A poor diet is a major risk factor for a stroke. High-fat foods can lead to the build-up of fatty plaques in your arteries and being overweight can lead to high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is a huge factor, doubling or even quadrupling your stroke risk if it is not controlled. So, choosing healthy meal and snack options can help you prevent stroke.

Exercise

Combining a healthy diet with regular exercise is the best way to maintain a healthy weight. Having a healthy weight reduces your chances of developing high blood pressure.

Regular exercise will make your heart and blood circulatory system more efficient. It will also lower your cholesterol level and keep your blood pressure at a healthy level.

The best type of exercise for high blood pressure is aerobic exercise which uses large muscle groups continuously and rhythmically, such as walking and cycling. Try to do at least 2½ hours a week of moderate-to vigorous-intensity exercise.

Don't Smoke

Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk of having a stroke. This is because it narrows your arteries and makes your blood more likely to clot.

Along with a healthy diet and regular exercise, smoking cessation is one of the most powerful lifestyle changes that will help you reduce your stroke risk significantly.

Moderation in Alcohol

Excessive consumption of alcohol can lead to high blood pressure and an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation), which are both major risk factors for stroke.

Drinking alcohol occasionally and in sensible amounts has not been linked to stroke. Men should have no more than two drinks per day, and women only one.

Widely cited research suggests that red wine may be linked with a decreased risk of stroke. While red wine contains resveratrol, which is thought to protect the heart and brain.
