Difference Between a Brain Injury and Head Injury
Brain is complex and
have unique connection of nerves, blood vessels and tissues. It is the center
of nervous system and it receives, processes and sends messages to every cell
and every part of the body. The information received is from any of our seven
senses: sight (visual), sound (auditory), touch (tactile), smell (olfactory),
movement (kinesthetic), taste (gustatory) and intuition (spiritual).
Any type of injury to the head or brain can be extremely serious. So always want to get medical attention immediately if anyone suffered any trauma to head. A medical professional can determine whether the trauma resulted in a head injury or a brain injury by doing diagnostic and imaging tests. Head injury and brain injury are often used interchangeably though they are technically different. The following are some distinctions between these two injuries.

Head
Injury
A head injury is an
injury to the skull. Skulls have been developed and designed to protect our brains.
A human has a layer of hair, scalp, skull, and several layers inside the skull
to protect the brain. These protective layers protect brain from having an
injury. So, a person can run as fast as they can into a tree or door without
having any injury to their brain. Head injury is the injury occurred to scalp
or skull or any part of the protective layer around the brain and not the
brain. Such head injuries can include skull fractures, lacerations to the skin
or scalp, and bruising of the skull or scalp. Surgery may be needed to repair
certain skull fractures and anyone who has a head injury should also be tested
and monitored for a potential brain injury.
Brain
Injury
A brain injury can be
the result of a head injury. The skull may not be injured, due to the strong
force hit on the head the brain is pulled back and forth inside the skull cause
shearing and tearing of the nerves in the brain. Brain Injury is the injury to
the brain that causes neurological dysregulation. This can result in ongoing physical,
emotional, and thinking problems. Any damage to the brain not at birth time is
termed as Acquired brain injury(ABI). A type of ABI called traumatic brain injury (TBI) includes any damage to the brain caused by an external force.
Various types of brain
injury:
Concussion
Traumatic Brain Injury
Stroke
Aneurysm
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Parkinson Disease
Dystonia
Myoclonic Disorder
Depending on the
location, nature, and severity of the damage brain injuries can have different
symptoms. Some symptoms are:
Loss of balance or
coordination;
Difficulty
communicating orally or in writing;
Difficulty controlling
emotions;
Memory loss;
Sleep disturbances;
Trouble with focus and
concentration;
Depression and anxiety;
and
Additional cognitive,
physical, or psychological difficulties.
Some brain injury
victims never fully recover and must live with permanent disabilities or
impairments.
AVA Brain Injury Program works to minimize the effects of cognitive and physical disabilities.
